1 Peter 2

1The apostle exhorteth the Christian converts to lay aside all uncharitableness. 4He sheweth their privileges through Christ the chief corner stone. 11He beseecheth them to abstain from fleshly lusts, and by their good conversation to promote God's glory among the Gentiles. 13He enforceth obedience to magistrates; 18and teacheth servants to obey their masters, and to suffer patiently for well doing, after the example of Christ.

1 aWHEREFORE blaying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2 cAs newborn babes, desire dthe *sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3 If so be ye have etasted that the Lord is fgracious.

4 To whom coming, as unto ga living hstone, idisallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5 Ye also, jas lively stones, 1are built up a spiritual house, kan holy priesthood, to offer up lspiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, mBehold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

7 nUnto you therefore which believe he is 2precious: but unto them which be disobedient, othe stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8 And pa stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: qwhereunto also they were appointed.

9 But rye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, san holy nation, 3a peculiar people; tthat ye should shew forth the 4praises of him uwho hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10 vWhich in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you was strangers and pilgrims, xabstain from fleshly lusts, which ywar against the soul;

12 zHaving your *conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, a5whereas they speak against you as evildoers, bthey may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

13 cSubmit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him dfor the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

15 For so is ethe will of God, fthat with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

16 gAs free, and not 6using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

17 h7Honour all men. iLove the brotherhood. jFear God. Honour the king.

18 kServants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the *froward.

19 lFor this is 8thankworthy, if a man mfor conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, nwhen ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is 9acceptable with God.

21 oFor even hereunto were ye called: pbecause Christ also suffered 10for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

22 qWho did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

23 rWho, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed 11himself to him that judgeth righteously:

24 sWho his own self bare our sins in his own body 12on the tree, tthat we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were uas sheep going astray; but are now returned unto vthe Shepherd and *Bishop of your souls.
