Isaiah 21

The prophet seeth in a vision the fall of Babylon by the Medes and Persians. 11He giveth warning to Edom. 13The set time of Arabia's calamity.

THE burden of athe desert of the sea. bAs whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, cfrom a terrible land.

A 1grievous vision is declared unto me; dthe treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. eGo up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all fthe sighing thereof have I made to cease.

Therefore gare my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that *travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

2My heart panted, fearfulness *affrighted me: hthe night of my pleasure hath he 3turned into fear unto me.

iPrepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: jarise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.

For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a kwatchman, let him declare what he seeth.

And he saw la chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:

And 4he cried, A lion: My lord, mI stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set *in my ward 5whole nights:

And, behold, nhere cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, oBabylon is fallen, is fallen; and pall the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

qO my threshing, and the 6corn of rmy floor: sthat which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

¶tThe burden of uDumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, vWatchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?

The watchman said, wThe morning cometh, and also the night: xif ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.

¶yThe burden upon Arabia. In the forest in zArabia shall ye lodge, O aye travelling companies of Dedanim.

The inhabitants of the land of bTema 7brought water to him that was thirsty, they cprevented with their bread him that fled.

For dthey fled 8from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.

For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the eyears of an hireling, and all the glory of fKedar shall fail:

And the residue of the number of 9archers, the gmighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: hfor the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
