Psalms 18

David's psalm of thanksgiving for God's mighty deliverances and manifold blessings.

To the chief Musician, aA Psalm of David, bthe servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD cthe words of this song in the day that dthe LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said,

I WILL elove thee, O LORD, my strength.

The LORD is my frock, and my fortress, and my gdeliverer; hmy God, 1my strength, in iwhom I will trust; jmy *buckler, and kthe *horn of my salvation, and my lhigh tower.

I mwill call upon the LORD, nwho is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

The osorrows of death *compassed me, and the floods of 2ungodly men made me afraid.

The 3sorrows of hell *compassed me about: the psnares of death q*prevented me.

rIn my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: she heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Then tthe earth shook and trembled; the foundations also uof the hills moved and were shaken, because he was *wroth.

There went up a vsmoke 4out of his nostrils, and wfire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

He xbowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.

And yhe rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did zfly upon the wings of the wind.

He amade darkness his secret place; his *pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

At bthe brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, chail stones and coals of fire.

dThe LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

Yea, ehe sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

Then fthe channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were *discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

He gsent from above, he took me, he drew me out of 5many waters.

He hdelivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were itoo strong for me.

They j*prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my *stay.

He kbrought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

The LORD lrewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

For mI have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

For nall his judgments were before me, and oI did not put away his statutes from me.

I was also pupright 6before him, and I kept myself from qmine iniquity.

Therefore rhath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands 7in his eyesight.

With sthe merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; tand with the *froward thou wilt 8shew thyself froward.

For uthou wilt save the afflicted people; vbut wilt bring down high looks.

For wthou wilt light my 9candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

For xby thee I have 10run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

As for God, yhis way is perfect: zthe word of the LORD is 11tried: he is aa *buckler to all those that trust in him.

bFor who is God *save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?

cIt is God that *girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

He dmaketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

eHe teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

Thou hast also given me fthe shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath *holden me up, and 12thy gentleness ghath made me great.

Thou hast henlarged my steps under me, that 13my feet did not slip.

iI have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed.

I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.

For thou jhast *girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast 14subdued under me those that rose up against me.

Thou hast also given me kthe necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.

They lcried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

Then did I mbeat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.

Thou hast delivered me from nthe strivings of the people; and othou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.

15As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: 16the strangers shall 17submit themselves unto me.

    • 15: Heb. At the hearing of the ear.
    • 16: Heb. the sons of the stranger.
    • 17: Or, yield feigned obedience. Heb. lie. Ps. 66.3; 59.11,12. De. 33.29. , Ps. 66:3 , Ps. 59:11 , Ps. 59:12 , De. 33:29

18The strangers shall fade away, and pbe afraid out of their close places.

The qLORD liveth; and rblessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

It is God that 19avengeth me, and 20subdueth the people under me.

He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, sthou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the 21violent man.

tTherefore will I 22give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.

uGreat deliverance giveth he to vhis king; and sheweth mercy to his wanointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore.
