Titus 1

The salutation. 5For what purpose Titus was left in Crete. 6How they should be qualified who are ordained to the ministry. 10The mouths of evil teachers must be stopped. 12The bad character of the Cretians.

aPAUL, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to bthe faith of cGod's elect, and the dacknowledging of the truth ewhich is after godliness;

f1In hope of eternal life, which God, that gcannot lie, promised hbefore the world began;

iBut hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is jcommitted unto me according to the commandment of kGod our Saviour;

To lTitus, mmine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, nfrom God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

For this cause left I thee in oCrete, pthat thou shouldest set in order the things that are 2wanting, and ordain qelders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

rIf any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of *riot or unruly.

For sa *bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; tnot selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy *lucre;

But ua lover of hospitality, a lover of 3good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

vHolding fast the faithful word 4as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the *gainsayers.

wFor there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially xthey of the circumcision:

yWhose mouths must be stopped, zwho subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, afor filthy *lucre's sake.

One of themselves, even a bprophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, *slow bellies.

This witness is true. Wherefore crebuke them sharply, that they may be dsound in the faith;

eNot giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

fUnto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their gmind and conscience is defiled.

hThey profess that they know God; but in works they ideny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work 5*reprobate.
